Partner
Sean Carney concentrates his practice in the area of insurance coverage and defense litigation, as well as commercial litigation. Sean has represented insurers in state and federal jurisdictions across the country in professional liability, environmental, construction defect, health care, underinsured / uninsured motorist, and PIP matters. Sean’s practice also includes civil litigation defense, including transportation and vehicular negligence claims, with damages ranging from routine to catastrophic.
Sean enjoys spending time with his wife, Cindy, and sons, Kelden and Patrick. He is a member of the United States Sailing Association, and is a certified open water scuba diver. Sean also enjoys playing golf.

Representative Matters
Westport Insurance Company v. St. Paul Insurance Company. Represented insurer in United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in contribution action involving novel questions of law between professional liability insurers.
Intalco Aluminum Corporation v. Central National Insurance Company. Represented insurer in declaratory judgment action to determine coverage obligations with respect to landfill closure and cleanup.
Westport Insurance Company v. Louis S. Robles. Represented insurer in multiple related adversarial proceedings against insured attorney related to asbestos litigation malpractice claims throughout the United States.
Rehanek v. United Services Automobile Association. Defended insurer in action involving the remaining available underinsured motorist benefits following deceased insured’s receipt of multiple policy limits settlements from at-fault drivers.
In re Hancock Scaffolding Litigation. Represented primary insurer in declaratory judgment action and related mediation of underlying wrongful death and personal injury actions arising from the collapse of a multi-ton swing stage from the 30th floor of the John Hancock Center in Chicago.
Estate of Crystal Brame v. City of Tacoma. Provided coverage analysis and consultation regarding insurer’s exposure arising from the murder/suicide of the City of Tacoma Chief of Police and his wife.
Hightower v. State of Oregon. Defended client in series of related cases arising from multi-fatality automobile accident, and successfully negotiated settlement of all claims without exposure to client’s personal assets.
